Oil and Gas - Northern Sea Route - Super Tanker Valadimir Tikhonov Artic Sea Routes have been a long standing dream ... now they are becoming a reality. In August 2012 the tanker Vladimir Tikhonov traversed the artic from the Russians Barents Sea port of Murmansk to the Bering Strait in 7 1/2 days

This Super Tanker carrying 120,000 tonnes of gas condensate

traveled from Murmansk to the Bering Strait through the Artic Northern Sea Route escorted by two nuclear powered icebreakers.

The Vladimir Tikhonov is owned by Sovcomflot, a Russian State owned shipping company

Sovcomflot plans to repeat it again this summer.

POSSIBLE SHIPPING ROUTES

Since 1920 over 400 Artic oil and gas fields have been discovered .

TRANSPORT ROUTES IN THE ARTIC

Most of the oil that has been shipped along the Northern Sea Route this season comes from Murmansk.

Oil is transported to the port of Murmansk by railway from western Siberia or smaller tankers from Varandei or Vitino oil terminals in the Russian north
