Tuesday, May 04, 2010, 8:55:56 PM
$30.00Discovered this musical treasure at a Galveston Island Estate which contained a collection of personal things that were originally used by Miss Lenora who lived and taught Piano Music Lessons at her family home located on 23rd Street in Galveston Texas.I am selling a few of the wonderful musical related items discovered at this estate sale From what I could see, she became a licensed Piano Teacher in the early 1930's and continued to share her love for music well into the 1960's.Had an opportunity to spend two and a half days sorting through the pre-Civil War house that survived the 1900 Flood and several major Hurricanes including Hurricane Ike in 2008.Based on the photos, papers and period antiques, Miss Lenora was very successful and was adored by all her knew her.The Etude Music Magazine June 1933

Vintage Lionel Tank Car Sunoco 6035 mfg 1952 to 1953
Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 7:53:22 PM
$20.00HistoryThe 6035 is the second short 8" single dome tank car produced by Lionel in the postwar era. It's also the first to include regular knuckle couplers -- as opposed to odd-looking scout-type couplers -- which were included on the first short tanker, the 1005. The 6035 was a result of Lionel wanting to manufacturer a less expensive tank car for its introductory train sets. Beginning in 1952, the 6035 replaced the 6465 as the traditional tank car included in all 027 beginner sets. The 6035 is a common tank car and easy to locate. The lettering is usually worn off from handling and examples with perfect lettering are hard to find. FeaturesStandard features on the 6035 are minimal. It includes: an unpainted gray single dome body, dark-blue Lionel Lines lettering, metal frame, scout trucks, operating magnetic couplers plus a Sunoco logo

Vintage Train Lionel Gondola 6032 mfg 1952 to 1953
Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 7:39:26 PM
$20.00The 6032 Lionel gondola was introduced by Lionel in 1952 and was included in many beginner sets. Lionel classified it as an entry-level item. It contained an unusual combination of scout-type trucks with magnetic couplers. FeaturesStandard features on the 6032 Lionel gondola include: painted black body with white lettering, scout trucks and two operating magnetic couplers. It was not sold with any type of load.

Vintage Lionel Flatcar 3409 circa 1961 Space and Military Series Helicopter Launcher but missing Chopper
Tuesday, April 27, 2010, 7:03:04 PM
$20.00HistoryThe 3409 Flatcar with Launching Helicopter was produced for only one year -- 1961. This is a scarce freight car for several reasons: Production was limited to a single year. It was only listed in one uncatalogued set for the year. The general train buying public was not aware of the car. It did not appear in the annual consumer catalogue, only the advanced consumer catalogue for 1961. Since the advanced consumer catalogues never received widespread distribution, most people were not aware of its existence. Lionel produced several flatcars with a launching helicopter during the postwar era. This one -- the 3409 -- was Lionel's least expensive version as it had Arch-bar trucks, non-operating couplers and a manual launching mechanism. The 3409 is part of Lionel's "Space & Military" series. As with many of the items from that series, there are delicate parts that are prone to damage due to improper handling. Locating a complete, all original flatcar with helicopter is a difficult task as few helicopters have survived intact. FeaturesStandard features of the 3409 include: unpainted light blue flatcar with white lettering, Arch bar trucks, black tail support structure, winding and launching mechanism plus a brakestand -- which did not include a metal brakewheel to further save money! The winding and launching mechanism is the smaller version -- 1.375" in diameter. The metal mechanism attached to the bottom of the car was always plain sheet metal, not blackened metal as seen on other helicopter freight cars. The helicopter was always a single blade version. Additional Detail, Photos & Box InformationThe length of this flatcar is approximately 11 1/4" long (coupler to coupler). Only Known Variation - The 3409 was always a light blue flarcar with a gray helicopter. The launching mechanism was always manual and never remote control activated

Vintage Camera 35mm PENTAX K1000 35mm Film Photography amateur photographers One of the most basic manual cameras ever made. This is a great student camera Perfect for Astro-photography too Roland Dressler
Monday, April 26, 2010, 3:22:33 PM
$120.00Vintage PENTAX Camera 35mm K1000 35mm Film Photography One of the most basic manual cameras ever made. This is a great student camera Perfect for Astro-photography Roland DresslerAn amateur can use it and take great pictures and a pro can use it and take fantastic pictures. It has no bells or whistles, but one thing it does do is perform flawlessly. It is a camera a beginner can start with and grow, or just someone who casualy takes pictures and wants to have a good reliable camers can operate and be very pleased providing they don't mind focusing manually and setting the speeds and aperatures manually. This is of course no big deal for most shots, but you won't reach in and grab your camera and snap a picture in a half second.I have taken this camera, my only camera for all these years, everywhere and have taken countless pictures. Never, and I stress never, have I ever had one bit of trouble with this camera. Not even once.In production for over two decades, it's still the SLR students love to learn onIf 35mm SLRs were cars, the Pentax K1000 would be a Volkswagen Beetle--a simple, practical, economical, lovable classic--unpretentious but with its own distinctive character.Indeed, this long-lived, totally manual model still has enough cachet that Pentax just named its latest digital SLR with built-in anti-shake reduction the Pentax K100D, a clear attempt to associate this new flagship consumer DSLR with the K1000 legend. Even the styling of the K100D, while smoother and less angular, echoes the unadorned simplicity of the K1000, a camera that, incredibly, was in production virtually unchanged for 21 years, from 1976 to 1997! And of course both the K1000 and the K100D accept Pentax K-mount lenses.A classic case of "less is more"For a landmark camera, the K1000's features seem pretty pedestrian by current standards: K-type bayonet mount, match-needle TTL, center-weighted metering at full aperture via two CdS cells at the sides of the fixed pentaprism, a horizontal cloth focal-plane shutter with speeds of 1-1/1000 sec plus B, MX and X-sync at 1/60 sec, and a manual single-stroke film-wind lever. Focusing aids include a central microprism surrounded by a groundglass collar and full-focusing screen.Only the vertically arrayed match-needle meter index to the right of the screen is visible in the finder no f/stops or shutter speeds as in more advanced models (e.g. the Pentax KX of 1975), no depth-of-field preview, and no motor drive compatibility. Where the K1000 fits inBasically the K1000 was the entry-level model in the brace of second-generation Asahi Pentax K-mount SLRs that included the hefty auto-exposure K2 DMD. Although released shortly thereafter, the compact MX and ultra-compact auto-exposure ME of 1977 really represent the third Pentax K-mount generation. In terms of Pentax genealogy, the K1000 can be viewed either as a Pentax KM sans depth-of-field preview and self-timer, or as a Spotmatic F with bayonet mount. The "1000" in K1000 refers to the top shutter speed of 1/1000 sec, and differentiates it from the previous bottom-of-the-line Spotmatic 500, which topped out at 1/500 sec. It is significant that the K1000 was the only K-series model to survive the M-series transition. A camera that sold itself--and defied the odds Remarkably, the K1000 succeeded and endured despite a virtual absence of advertising on the part of Pentax a Cinderella camera if ever there was one. While lacking the glitz, glamour, high tech features, and marketing push of its higher-priced Pentax siblings, the bare bones K1000 just continued to sell steadily, despite repeated reports of its demise. Attractive in a Spartan way, the mid-size K1000 defied all odds by continuing to flourish in the wake of ultra-compact 35mm SLRs spurred by the Olympus OM-1, past the age of multi-mode auto-exposure SLRs exemplified by the Canon A-1, and well into the auto-focus era.It was a camera Pentax could simply not stop making, even though the company may have wanted to, because it continued to fill a profitable marketing niche. Traditionalists and cheapskates who didn't want "all that stuff" adored the K1000, photography instructors extolled it and recommended it to their students, who bought it in droves. To Pentax fans, it embodied the essence of the Pentax philosophy of sound basic engineering, high quality, total reliability and classic design. The K1000 in perspectiveIs the K1000 perfect? Hardly its meter needle tends to be sluggish, its shutter release is not a paragon of buttery smoothness, and its shutter is fairly loud. And while the fit and finish of its body parts is quite good, it is not built to the same standards as, say a Nikon F or a Pentax LX, and it is not designed to withstand the rigors of professional use. In short it is a good basic camera whose very lack of features has turned it into a kind of cult classic and one that holds its value remarkably well. Part of the K1000's appeal, and its picture-taking prowess, are the result of the truly fine performance of Pentax lenses, which have always compared favorably to their more illustrious competitors, both Japanese and German.Which K1000 for you? (Yes, there's more than one!)As Pentax aficionados are well aware, after about 15 years of being manufactured in Japan, production of the venerable K1000 was transferred to Hong Kong, and then to mainland China in order to lower production costs for this economy-priced, mechanically based model. The Made In Japan K1000s are (except for wind-lever tips and the like) all metal, and bear the distinctive "AOCo" Asahi Optical Company logo and the Asashi Pentax name on the front of the pentaprism housing. These identifying marks are absent on the Hong Kong and China models, which are simply labeled "Pentax" and "K1000." The Chinese and late-production Hong Kong models also have a chromed plastic top cover and bottom plate, which doesn't affect durability, but they also have a pot metal (rather than a machined alloy) wind-lever base that can bend, causing the wind lever to scrape the top cover. In addition the Chinese version has a plastic rewind knob and shaft, which can break under heavy use. While the overall performance differences and prices for Japanese, Hong Kong, and Chinese K1000s are relatively minor, collectors prefer the original Made In Japan models. As for lenses, the 50mm f/2 SMC Pentax fitted to the original K1000 is very good indeed, but the 50mm f/1.7 and 50mm f/1.4 lenses often found on later models are at least its equal in performance. This is one no-frills camera with all the right stuff.888Life goes on, even after the discontinuation of the Pentax K-1000For more than two decades, photo instructors in high schools and colleges across the United States told their students that they must own a manually controlled single lens reflex as a prerequisite to taking the class. I've seen the course requirement sheets. Often they specify Pentax K-1000 - sometimes even suggesting that no other camera will do.It's understandable that instructors recommended the Pentax K-1000, because it was an ideal camera for students to learn the essentials of film-based photography. It will probably be several years before the word filters out to the farthest corner that Pentax discontinued the K-1000 in 1997 and there are no more to be had. For now, specialty dealers must do two things: Advise students (and instructors) that the K-1000 no longer exists - without being regarded as liars or bait-and-switch specialists. Stock, suggest and sell at least one reasonable alternative. For the first part, take the portion of your Pentax catalog - or a trade paper announcement - which announced the discontinuation and put it in a small plastic frame near your SLR display. Then make a check list of the features found (and not found) in the K-1000: shutter speeds from 1 to 1/1000th second manual focus match needle exposure system manual wind and rewind interchangeable lenses using the most common bayonet lens mount no self-timer accepts cable release price under $250 At this time, the appropriate replacement is the Promaster 2500PX.At this point, all the K-1000s out there are at least 10 years old. Used ones still bring a relatively high price because they are so versatile.STRENGTHS:Exceptionally solid camera Reliability Takes fantastic pictures Easy to use for a beginner but can be used by a pro Extremely rugged.Took it to some very rough places and exposed it to a lot of extreme environments. It never ever let me down. Pentax manual focus lenses are some of the finest optics in the worldThis camera can be utilized for astro-photography, as the battery can be removed and the camera used for long exposure (hours long, with no problems).

Blue Devil Blues Texas Alexander Texana Texas Art Roland Dressler

$10.00Art Print measures:17 inches X 11 inches This is a retro reproduction recent re-issue of advertising poster promoting recorded music printed on heavy card stock paper "TEXAS" ALEXANDER sings BLUE DEVIL BLUES PENITENTIARY BLUES Okeh ELECTRIC Both Blue Devil Blues & Penitentiary Moan Blues were recorded in November 1928 ALGER "TEXAS" ALEXANDER 1900-1954 RACE RECORDS As his name implied, Blues singer Texas Alexander was from the Lone Star State. He started performing at local parties and picnics in the early 1920s, sometimes working with Blind Lemon Jefferson. In 1927 he started recording and made some very good Blues records with such Jazz luminaries as Lonnie Johnson, Eddie Lang, Clarence Williams and King Oliver. He continued to record until 1929 and then after a five year break made a number of recordings in 1934. He didn't record again until 1947. Throughout his career Alexander often performed with his guitarist cousin Lightnin' Hopkins. During the Depression and afterwards Hopkins and Alexander often resorted to working as street musicians or outside of music altogether. Alexander didn't play an instrument so he always performed with accompanists or in a band setting. In the late 1930s he worked with Lowell Fulson and Howlin' Wolf among others. In 1939 Alexander murdered his wife and was sentenced to prison from 1940 to 1945. When he got out of prison he hit the streets again with Lightnin' Hopkins and the pair recorded in 1947 on the Aladdin label. Texas Alexander made his last recording in 1950 with Benton's Busy Bees and died of syphilis in 1954. Additional notes: A primal, stirring blues voice, Alexander was well known in the Brazos River bottomlands when he started recording in 1927. From bluesmen like Lightnin' Hopkins and Lowell Fulson comes a verbal image of this big-voiced master of blues song craft standing on a wagon bed at a country fair or picnic. His vibrant tenor, one step away from a field holler, rang out over the revelry as he improvised verse after verse. His early records for Okeh are notable not only for the personal originality of his songs, but for the musical motifs against which they are set. Unable to play himself, Alexander used a variety of accompanists. On disc these range from the brilliant guitar work of Little Hat Jones, Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang to the string band blues of the Mississipi Sheiks and the full on jazz of King Oliver's New Orleans band. Alexander's performing and recording career continued into the '30s with sessions for Vocalion. In 1940, he was sent to the state pen at Paris, TX, for killing his wife. After his release in 1945 he spent time in Houston, joining his cousin Lightnin' Hopkins for live shows and recording for the Freedom label with pianist Buster Pickens. By 1954 he was back in the bottomlands where he died a debilitated victim of the ravages of syphillis. His recordings -- titles like "Corn Bread Blues" or "Frisco Train" -- are an express ticket back to days before records and radio, when the blues were young and lived way up country. Price $20.

$10.00Retro Reprint Recent Re-Issue of Record Music Advertisement Poster graphics printed on heavy card stock paper Measures: 17" x 11" Blind Lemon Jefferson "Jack o' Diamond Blues" by "Blind Lemon" Jefferson Deuces are wild. Gimme two cards. I'll keep these. One-eyed Jacks are wild too. Here's a great record for your phonograph, " Jack o' Diamond Blues", by Blind Lemon Jefferson the famous Blues singer from Dallas. Everybody who knows a Jack from an Ace will want this novel , popular Paramount Record No. 12373 Jack o' Diamonds Blues and Chock House Blues Long Lonesome Blues and Got the Blues Black Horse Blues and Corinna Blues PARAMOUNT The Popular Race Record HISTORY NOTES: JEFFERSON, BLIND LEMON (ca. 1893–1929). Blind Lemon Jefferson, a seminal blues guitarist and songster, was born on a farm in Couchman, near Wortham, Freestone County, Texas, in the mid-1890s. Sources differ as to the exact birthdate. Census records indicate that he was born on September 24, 1893, while apparently Jefferson himself wrote the date of October 26, 1894, on his World War I draft registration. He was the son of Alec and Clarissy Banks Jefferson. His parents were sharecroppers. There are numerous contradictory accounts of where Lemon lived, performed, and died, complicated further by the lack of photographic documentation; to date, only two photographs of him have been identified, and even these are misleading. The cause of his blindness isn't known, nor whether he had some sight. Little is known about Jefferson's early life. He must have heard songsters and bluesmen, like Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas and "Texas" Alexander. Both Thomas and Alexander traveled around East Texas and performed a variety of blues and dance tunes. Clearly, Jefferson was an heir to the blues songster tradition, though the specifics of his musical training are vague. Legends of his prowess as a bluesman abound among the musicians who heard him, and sightings of Jefferson in different places around the country are plentiful. By his teens, he began spending time in Dallas. About 1912 he started performing in the Deep Ellum and Central Track areas of Dallas, where he met Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Leadbelly, one of the most legendary musical figures to travel and live in Texas. In interviews he gave in the 1940s, Leadbelly gave various dates for his initial meeting with Jefferson, sometimes placing it as early as 1904. But he mentioned 1912 most consistently, and that seems plausible. Jefferson would then have been eighteen or nineteen years old. The two became musical partners in Dallas and the outlying areas of East Texas. Leadbelly learned much about the blues from Blind Lemon, and he had plenty to contribute as a musician and a showman. Though Jefferson was known to perform almost daily at the corner of Elm Street and Central Avenue in Dallas, there is no evidence that he ever lived in the city. The 1920 census shows him living in Freestone County with an older half-brother, Nit C. Banks, and his family. Jefferson's occupation is listed as "musician" and his employer as "general public." Some time after 1920, Jefferson met Roberta Ransom, who was ten years his senior. They married in 1927, the year that Ransom's son by a previous marriage, Theaul Howard, died. Howard's son, also named Theaul, remained in the area and retired in nearby Ferris, Texas. In 1925 Jefferson was discovered by a Paramount recording scout and taken to Chicago to make records. Though he was not the first folk (or "country") blues singer–guitarist, or the first to make commercial recordings, Jefferson was the first to attain a national audience. His extremely successful recording career began in 1926 and continued until 1929. He recorded 110 sides (including all alternate takes), of which seven were not issued and six are not yet available in any format. In addition to blues, he recorded two spiritual songs, "I Want to be Like Jesus in My Heart" and "All I Want is That Pure Religion," released under the pseudonym Deacon L. J. Bates. Overall, Jefferson's recordings display an extraordinary virtuosity. His compositions are rooted in tradition, but are innovative in his guitar solos, his two-octave vocal range, and the complexity of his lyrics, which are at once ironic, humorous, sad, and poignant. Jefferson's approach to creating his blues varied. Some of his songs use essentially the same melodic and guitar parts. Others contain virtually no repetition. Some are highly rhythmic and related to different dances, the names of which he called out at times between or in the middle of stanzas. He made extensive use of single-note runs, often apparently picked with his thumb, and he played in a variety of keys and tunings. Jefferson is widely recognized as a profound influence upon the development of the Texas blues tradition and the growth of American popular music. His significance has been acknowledged by blues, jazz, and rock musicians, from Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, and T-Bone Walker to Bessie Smith, Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, Carl Perkins, Jefferson Airplane, and the Beatles. In the 1970s, Jefferson was parodied as "Blind Mellow Jelly" by Redd Foxx in his popular "Sanford and Son" television series, and by the 1990s there was a popular alternative rock band called Blind Melon. A caricature of Blind Lemon appears on the inside of a Swedish blues magazine, called Jefferson. He appears in the same characteristic pose as his publicity photo, but instead of wearing a suit and tie, he is depicted in a Hawaiian-style shirt. In each issue, the editors put new words in the singer's mouth: "Can I change my shirt now? " "Is the world ready for me yet?" Alan Govenar and Akin Babatunde have composed a musical, Blind Lemon: Prince of Country Blues, staged at the Majestic Theatre, Dallas (1999), and the Addison WaterTower Theatre (2001), and have also developed a touring musical revue, entitled Blind Lemon Blues. Jefferson died in Chicago on December 22, 1929, and was buried in the Wortham Negro Cemetery. His grave was unmarked until 1967, when a Texas state historical marker was dedicated to him. He was inducted in the Blues Foundation's Hall of Fame in 1980. In 1997 the town of Wortham began a blues festival named for the singer, and a new granite headstone was placed at his gravesite. The inscription included lyrics from one of the bluesman's songs: "Lord, it's one kind favor I'll ask of you. See that my grave is kept clean." In 2007 the name of the cemetery was changed to Blind Lemon Memorial Cemetery. Among Jefferson's most well-known songs are "Matchbox Blues," "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean," "That Black Snake Moan," "Mosquito Blues," "One Dime Blues," "Tin Cup Blues," "Hangman's Blues," "'Lectric Chair Blues," and "Black Horse Blues." All of Blind Lemon Jefferson's recordings have been reissued by Document Records. References: BIBLIOGRAPHY: David Evans, ed., Journal of Black Music Research, 20.1 (Spring 2000). $10.00Art Print measures:17 1/2" X 11 1/2" This is a reproduction recent re-issue of vintage concert poster promoting Armadill-o promotional relic VALENTINE DANCE Austin's Hotest Dance Bands Saturday February 12th PAUL RAY and the Cobras JIMMY VAUGHAN and the Thunderbirds ARMADILL-O In 1970, Austin's flagship rock music venue, the Vulcan Gas Company, closed, leaving the city's nascent live music scene without an incubator. One night, Eddie Wilson, manager of the local group Shiva's Headband, stepped outside a nightclub where the band was playing and noticed an old, abandoned National Guard armory. Wilson found an unlocked garage door on the building and was able to view the cavernous interior using the headlights of his automobile. He had a desire to continue the legacy of the Vulcan Gas Company, and was inspired by what he saw in the armory to create a new music hall in the derelict structure. The armory was estimated to have been built in 1948, but no records of its construction could be located. The building was ugly, uncomfortable, and had poor acoustics, but offered cheap rent and a central location. Posters for the venue usually noted the address as 525 1/2 Barton Springs Road (Rear), behind the Skating Palace. The name for the Armadillo was inspired by the use of armadillos as a symbol in the artwork of Jim Franklin, a local poster artist, and from the building itself. In choosing the mascot for the new venture, Wilson and his partners wanted an "armored" animal since the building was an old armory. The nine-banded armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus) was chosen because of its hard shell that looks like armor, its history as a survivor (virtually unchanged for 50 million years), and its near-ubiquity in central Texas. Wilson also believed the building looked like it had been some type of headquarters at one time. He initially proposed "International Headquarters" but in the end it became "World Headquarters." In founding the Armadillo, Wilson was assisted by Franklin, Mike Tolleson, an entertainment attorney, Bobby Hedderman from the Vulcan Gas Company and Hank Alrich. Funding for the venture was initially provided by Shiva's Headband founder, Spencer Perskin, and Mad Dog, Inc. an Austin literati group. The Armadillo World Headquarters officially opened on August 7, 1970 with Shiva's Headband, the Hub City Movers, and Whistler performing. The hall held about 1,500 patrons, but chairs were limited, so most patrons sat on the floor on sections of carpet that had been pieced together. The Armadillo caught on quickly with the hippie culture of Austin because admission was inexpensive and the hall tolerated marijuana use. Even though illicit drug use was flagrant, the Armadillo was never raided. Anecdotes suggest the police were worried about having to bust their fellow officers as well as local and state politicians. Soon, the Armadillo started receiving publicity in national magazines such as Rolling Stone. Time magazine wrote that the Armadillo was to the Austin music scene what The Fillmore had been to the emergence of rock music in the 1960s. The clientèle became a mixture of hippies, cowboys, and businessmen who stopped by to have lunch and a beer and listen to live music. At its peak, the amount of Lone Star draft beer sold by the Armadillo was second only to the Houston Astrodome. The Neiman-Marcus department store even offered a line of Armadillo-branded products. The blend of country and rock music performed at the hall became known as "The Austin Sound," "Redneck Rock," or "Cosmic Cowboy." Many upcoming and established acts such as Willie Nelson, Ray Charles, and ZZ Top played the Armadillo. Freddie King, Frank Zappa, and Commander Cody all recorded live albums there. Bruce Springsteen played five shows during 1974. The Australian band AC/DC played their first American show at the Armadillo with Canadian band Moxy in July 1977. Despite its successes, the Armadillo always struggled financially. The addition of the Armadillo Beer Garden in 1972 and the subsequent establishment of food service were both bids to generate positive cash flow. However, the financial difficulties continued. This predicament was blamed on a combination of large guaranteed payments for the acts, cheap ticket prices, and poor promotion. The club finally had to lay off staff members in late 1976 and file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1977. Another factor in the club's demise was that it sat on 5.62 acres (22,700 m2) of prime real estate in what soon became a prime development area in the rapidly growing city. The Armadillo's landlord sold the property for an amount estimated between $4 million and $8 million. The final concert at the Armadillo took place on December 31, 1980. The sold-out New Year's Eve show featured Asleep at the Wheel and Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen. Some reports say the show ended at 4 a.m., while others claim that the bands played until dawn. The contents of the Armadillo were sold at auction in January 1981, and the old armory was razed for a high-rise office building. With the success of the Armadillo and Austin's burgeoning music scene, KLRN (now KLRU), the local PBS television affiliate, created Austin City Limits, a program showcasing popular local, regional, and national music acts. The Armadillo Christmas Bazaar began in 1976 at the Armadillo, and is still held annually during the Christmas season. The Bazaar was another attempt to improve cash flow for the hall. When the Armadillo closed, the Bazaar changed locations every year, as it leased whatever large empty retail space might be available at the time. In 1995, the bazaar settled at the Austin Music Hall for twelve years. Due to remodeling of the Austin Music Hall, the Bazaar had to move its 2007 show to the Austin Convention Center. The bazaar has become one of the top-ranked arts and crafts shows in the nation with a long waiting list of artisans who wish to show their work. On August 19, 2006, the City of Austin dedicated a commemorative plaque at the site where the Armadillo once stood. Price $20.

$29.99Spirit St Louis Airplane Charles Lindbergh plane Vintage 1/4 Lindberg classic 1950s 1/48 scale model kit 520 Antique Aircraft Aviation Aviator Americana Hobby Collectible Art Craft Artwork Graphic Arts The Spirit of St. Louis is a wonderful plane. It’s like a living creature, gliding along smoothly, happily, as though a successful flight means as much to it as to me, as though we shared our experiences together, each feeling beauty, life, and death as keenly, each dependent on the other’s loyalty. We have made this flight across the ocean, not I or it.- Charles Lindbergh, 1927Spirit of St. Louis" was named in honor of Lindbergh's supporters in St. Louis, Missouri, who paid for the aircraft. "NYP" is an acronym for "New York-Paris," the object of the flight. In 1919 Raymond Orteig, a Frenchman who owned the Brevoort and Lafayette hotels in New York City, made the fledgling flying world an extraordinary offer. Enthralled by tales of pioneer aviators, Orteig put up a purse of $25,000 to the first aviator to fly nonstop from Paris to New York or New York to Paris. Orteig said his offer would be good for five years. Five years came and went. No one accomplished the feat. No one even tried. In 1926, Orteig extended the term of his offer another five years. This time around aviation technology had advanced to a point where some thought it might actually be possible to fly across the vast Atlantic. Charles A. Lindbergh was one of them. As a youth, Lindbergh studied with fascination the World War I flying exploits of French ace Rene Fonck who had shot down 75 German planes in the war. In September 1926, Fonck set his sights on crossing the Atlantic from New York to Paris and claiming Orteig's bounty. It was not to be. Fonck's plane, a silver biplane with a luxurious cabin, burst into flames before it even left the ground. Fonck survived the crash, but two crew members were killed. In 1926 Charles Lindbergh had not yet achieved the level of acclaim of his more illustrious flying counterparts. He had, however, gained a reputation as a talented flyer. His experience as a daredevil barnstormer, expert mechanic, and intrepid airmail pilot made many within the relatively small community of flyers take notice. As important, Lindbergh was full of the confidence necessary to undertake such a bold adventure. "Why shouldn't I fly from New York to Paris? ...I have more than four years of aviation behind me, and close to two thousand hours in the air. I've barnstormed over half of the forty-eight states. ...Why am I not qualified for such a flight?" he later wrote in his autobiographical book, "The Spirit of St. Louis." Lindbergh convinced himself that he was qualified for such a flight, and set his sights upon convincing othersLindbergh's reputation as an ace pilot was unassailable in St. Louis. He had pioneered the airmail routes between that city and Chicago. Harry Knight, president of the St. Louis Flying Club, had great respect for Lindbergh. So much so that Knight chose Lindbergh as his personal flight instructor. Lindbergh, in turn, came to Knight when seeking backers for his proposed flight. Knight put Lindbergh in contact with the head of the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce, Harold Bixby. Meeting with Bixby, Lindbergh predicted great things for St. Louis if the city were to put its support behind such an historic flight. Painting a picture of St. Louis as an aviation hub, Lindbergh convinced Bixby to sponsor his flight. A budget of $15,000 was agreed uponWith his backers entrusting in him their full confidence, Lindbergh set off to find the right plane. His notion of what constituted the right plane for such a flight put him at odds with the prevailing ideas of the day. While other aviators were placing their faith in the increased power and purported safety of multi-engine planes, Lindbergh determined that multiple engines increased, rather than decreased, the odds of failure. "I'm not sure three engines would really add much to safety on a flight like that. There'd be three times the chance of engine failure," he later recorded. For his transatlantic attempt, he sought out a single-engine plane. And he would be flying alone. His equation was simple: less weight (one engine, one pilot) would increase fuel efficiency and allow for a longer flying range. After failing to convince several airplane manufacturers of the rightness of his thinking, Lindbergh was told of a single-engine plane owned by the Columbia Aircraft Corporation of New York that could be his for $15,000. That sum excluded an engine. Still, Lindbergh wanted the plane. He walked away from the deal, however, when Columbia Aircraft Corporation president Charles Levine insisted on choosing the pilot and crew. Nineteen-twenty-six had turned into 1927, and Lindbergh was running out of time. Other aviators were progressing with tests and flight plans, and Lindbergh still didn't even have a planeIn February, 1927, Lindbergh's luck improved. Less than 24 hours after hearing of Lindbergh's search for a single-engine plane, the Ryan Airlines Corporation of San Diego, California offered to build such a plane for $6,000. Again, excluding the engine. Ryan, led by company president Frank Mahoney, would need three months to manufacturer Lindbergh's "Spirit of St. Louis." Upon arriving at the Ryan headquarters to meet with Mahoney and chief engineer and designer Donald Hall, Lindbergh was unimpressed with what he saw. Ryan Airlines was housed in a broken down building that used to be a fish cannery. A discouraging stench filled the air. After meeting with Mahoney and Hall, however, Lindbergh's spirits were much improved. The men voiced full confidence in Lindbergh's choice of a single-engine plane and Lindbergh was won over by their apparent skill and dedication, even after he informed them that the plane would have to be completed in two months, not three. From that moment on, Donald Hall practically lived at Ryan Airlines. His commitment was matched by that of his staff, as voluntary overtime became the norm. These men sensed they were becoming part of something historic. "The Spirit of St. Louis" was designed with one thought in mind: to get to Paris. Extra fuels tanks were added and the wing span increased to accommodate the additional weight. The plane would have a maximum range of 4,000 miles, more than enough to reach Paris. One of the more innovative design decisions involved placing the main fuel tank in front of, rather than behind, the pilot's seat. Lindbergh didn't want to be caught between the tank and the engine if the plane was forced to land. This configuration also meant that Lindbergh would not be able to see directly ahead as he flew. It didn't seem to trouble him much. "There's not much need to see ahead in normal flight," Lindbergh told Donald Hall. "I won't be following any airways. When I'm near a flying field, I can watch the sky ahead by making shallow banks. All I need is a window on each side to see through..." If needed, Lindbergh would use a periscope attached to the plane's left side to see what was in front of him. In his efforts to pare down the plane's weight, Lindbergh considered every detail. Any item considered too heavy or unnecessary was left behind. These included a radio, parachute, gas gauges, and navigation lights. Lindbergh designed for himself special lightweight boots for the flight, and went so far as to cut his maps down to include only those reference points he would need. Every ounce mattered. Instead of a heavy leather pilot's seat, Lindbergh would be perched in a far lighter wicker chairUpon its completion on April 28, 1927, the "Spirit of St. Louis" weighed in at 2,150 lbs. when empty. It stood 9 feet, 8 inches high, was 27 feet, 8 inches long, and had a 46-foot wingspan. The plane was powered by a 220-horsepower, air-cooled, 9-cylinder Wright J-5C "Whirlwind" engine that was estimated to be able to perform flawlessly for over 9,000 hours. The engine was outfitted with a special mechanism designed to keep it greased during the entire transatlantic flight. Two days before Lindbergh's scheduled May 10, 1927 departure from San Diego, news broke that Frenchmen Charles Nungesser and Francois Coli had taken off from Paris bound for New York. It appeared as if all of Lindbergh's and Ryan Airlines' efforts had been in vain. However, despite a radio report claiming that Nungesser and Coli had been spotted over the Atlantic, the two were never seen again. Lindbergh's chance for glory was still within reach. "Lucky Lindy" and his "Spirit of St. Louis" landed at Curtiss Field on Long Island, New York, on May 12, 1927. En route, pilot and plane had already broken the existing record for the fastest transcontinental flight. Eight days later, Lindbergh and his silver plane were poised to set new records as they took off from Roosevelt Field. Fighting fog, icing, and sleep deprivation, Lindbergh landed safely at Le Bourget Field in Paris at 10:22pm on May 20, 1927. "The Spirit of St. Louis" had carried him over 3,600 miles in 33.5 hours. A new aviation hero was born, and the "Spirit of St. Louis" attained legendary status. The "Spirit of St. Louis" was designed by Donald Hall under the direct supervision of Charles Lindbergh. It is a highly modified version of a conventional Ryan M-2 strut-braced monoplane, powered by a reliable Wright J-5C engine. Because the fuel tanks were located ahead of the cockpit for safety in case of an accident, Lindbergh could not see directly ahead, except by using a periscope on the left side or by turning the airplane and looking out a side window. The two tubes beneath the fuselage are flare dispensers that were installed for Lindbergh's flights to Latin America and the Caribbean

("F. C.") Hall of Chickasha and was named for his daughter. Two months later Wiley Post, Hall's personal pilot, utilized the plane to win a Los Angeles-to-Chicago air race. In June 1931 Post, accompanied by navigator Harold Gatty, piloted the Winnie Mae around the world in a record eight days, fifteen hours, and fifty-one minutes. Post subsequently acquired the airplane from Hall and flew it solo around the world in July 1933. His time was seven days, eighteen hours, and forty-nine and one-half minutes. Post used the Winnie Mae to conduct high-altitude flights beginning in 1934. Since its construction prohibited cabin pressurization, he developed the first pressurized flight suit. On December 7, 1934, Post set an unofficial record by flying the craft to an estimated fifty thousand feet above Bartlesville. After four unsuccessful transcontinental flights through the substratosphere, the airplane was retired. Post's widow sold the Winnie Mae and its original instruments to the Smithsonian Institution in August 1935. At the beginning of the twenty-first century the Winnie Mae was on permanent exhibit at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center at Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia.

He built a series of airplanes carrying the DGA, or "Damn Good Aircraft," logo. The most famous was Mister Mulligan, the racing DGA-6 that captured both the Bendix and Thompson trophies at the 1935 National Air Races. Howard was the only pilot that achieved that feat in the same year. The Bendix Trophy was a cross-country race from the west coast to the site of the National Air Races in Cleveland, Ohio. At the National Air Races, the Thompson Trophy was given to the winner of the unlimited division in close-course pylon racing. Ben Howard and Gordon Isarel flew the DGA-6 in the Bendix and won with a speed of 238.70 m.p.h. Harold Neumann racing the DGA-6 recorded a 220.19 in winning the trophy. Howard's DGA-6 was the only racer during the golden age of airshows to evolve into a successful commercial production aircraft. It was first as the DGA-8 & -9 and then the DGA-11 & 12.Mr. Mulligan's engineering advantage was it's low-drag airframe and the use of the 850-horsepower Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial. The four-seat Mister Mulligan's commercial roots made the difference in the Bendix race. Ben Howard and Gordon Isarel beat Roscoe Turner by less than a minute, thanks to two fewer fueling stops in the race from Burbank, California to Cleveland, Ohio. Mister Mulligan broke a three-year streak of wins in the Bendix for Wedell-Williams. Howard and his DGA-6 replaced Williams-Williams as the star of aviation by outlasting defending champion Turner in the Thompson race when he was forced out. Newspapers chronicled the 1935 event as the "Ben Howard National Air Races". Mister Mulligan's days in the national air racing were limited. Howard and his wife were injured when Mister Mulligan lost a propeller blade and crash-landed in New Mexico during the early stages of the 1936 Bendix race.
